Valerie St. Pierre Smith
Background
Aanii (Hello)! After receiving my M.F.A from San Diego State University, I have worked as a costume designer and artisan for clients that include Warner Brothers Studios; Universal Studios, Hollywood; The Old Globe Theatre and Sea World, San Diego. I have also received several awards and recognition for innovative design work. My design work spans a range from classics like Tartuffe and A Doll's House through Guys and Dolls and Merrily We Roll Along all the way to the abstract world of Caryl Churchill's The Skriker. Being of Native American descent, I particularly enjoy working with various performance groups and advocating on behalf of the arts and culture of my native people.
Currently, I also have the privilege of serving as Assistant Professor of Theatre for The George Washington University's Department of Theatre and Dance. As an educator it is my aim to excite and inspire students to broaden their horizons through both scholarly endeavors and experiential learning. By teaching a strong foundation of skills coupled with opportunities for experimentation my goal is to help students develop new and practical perspectives that apply not only in academia but also in life.
A few samples of my design work, and production photos, may be found through the links to the left, or by clicking on the highlighted titles in my resume below. Related Photos includes a few samples of styling and make-up work. I am also a studio artist, samples of which can be found under Textile Art. Several of these pieces can also be found on display and consignment at Future Green on Church St. between 14th and 15th Sts. NW in downtown Washington, D.C.
